Sandwich Bread
There’s something so satisfying about pulling a warm loaf of homemade bread out of the oven.
When Erick and I were first married, money was tight, so I started making things like sandwich bread from scratch to stretch our grocery budget. What began as a way to save money turned into something I genuinely loved. Homemade just tastes better. And brings more joy.
If you’ve been wanting to try making your own bread, this is a simple, reliable recipe that’s perfect for beginners.
Homemade White Sandwich Bread
* 3 cups bread flour
* 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
* 1 tbsp sugar
* 1 tsp salt
* 3 tbsp butter, softened
* ½ cup milk
* 3/4 cup warm water
Directions
1. Combine the water and milk and warm to about 100 degrees. Add the yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes.
2. Add the flour, sugar and salt to the bowl of your mixer, mix with your hand. Then add the yeast/milk mixture. Mix for 2-3 mins with your dough hook. Let rest 10 mins. Then add the butter one Tbsp at a time kneading for 1 min in between. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 mins.
3. Dump out on an unfloured surface and shape into a ball. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
4. Punch the dough down and dump onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan. Let rise again until the dough crowns about 1 inch above the pan. About 45 mins.
5. Bake at 350°F for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown.
6. Brush the top with butter if desired and let cool before slicing.
